ABOUT US

Welcome All! I am Jenn...

My lifetime dream became a reality with the opening of Modern Day Floral. Everyday I am fortunate enough to work with one of the most beautiful mediums in the world, fresh flowers. I absolutely love what I do and thanks to my brides, vendors, retails customers and special event client, I get to live out my dream daily. I would also like to personally thank my incredible staff for all their hard work and passion... They inspire me daily! Enjoy the blog, visit often and remember, we love "warm fuzzies!"

MEET THE STAFF!

What do you get when you bring a group of passionate and talented people together? Modern Day Floral! These fascinating men and women amaze me everyday with their commitment and love for this business. I think what truly makes our group so special is the diverse backgrounds we come from... From interior to clothing design, retailer and experience floral design... Wow, what a group!

Emily is one of my lead designers - she brings the energy to the group. She has been with me from the beginning and is responsible for the "look" that has become Modern Day Floral! The talent, commitment and positive attitude she brings to work is invaluable. The cup is always 1/2 full... She is my AI in AIFD!

Karen is another of my lead designers - her calm nature, experience and romantic style bring a complimentary element to Modern Day Floral. She is the most amazing Christmas tree decorator and is affectionately known as Miss Christmas :)

Rueben is the newest lead designer to the group! His clean, unique and contemporary styles brings a new flare to Modern Day Floral. He keeps us entertained with his amazing music collection on his iPod!!

Erin brings with her a BFA in interior design from Kendall College of Art and Design and an incredibly passionate type A personality. She is my checks and balances girl with a quest for knowledge. Perspective drawings are definitely her specialty... This girl is going places!

Lauren is our public relations and marketing guru! She brings a fun, spunky energy to our group and isn't afraid to jump into the middle of any task!!

Charlie, Jonathan, Ernie, Aaron and Ryan are the guys of the group (poor souls)! The mere fact that they tolerate all of us for more than 5 minutes is a miracle. Estrogen flows in buckets at Modern Day but believe it or not, we're all a loving family!

Event Recap: Engagement Party at Meijer Gardens

Last month, we worked alongside a beautiful bride-to-be and her mother to design a homespun engagement party located at the Michigan’s Farm Garden.  This well-kept secret is a three-quarters replica of the home that Lena Meijers grew up in as a child.   The home had all the sweet touches you would expect–an adorable red barn, a gorgeous garden, farm animals represented by bronze sculptures and a perfectly appointed farm house in butter yellow, of course.  The setting was straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting.

The beautiful gardens surrounding the property served as our design inspiration for the material and colors used in the florals.  Garden roses in shades of pink, coral and butter yellow coupled with several fantastic complimentary materials brought this country-style engagement party to life.

For those of you who have yet to visit Frederik Meijer Gardens, I would strongly recommend you take time to visit this absolutely stunning location.  They not only host weddings and events, they host outdoor concerts, an annual butterfly exhibit and the gardens and sculpture park are  truly spectacular.   And now through September, Frederik Meijer Gardens is hosting a stellar collection of Chihully pieces.  Thanks to Chaparral Shimko, the event coordinator, I was given a private tour during our event design meeting.  I couldn’t help but leave feeling awe-inspired and creatively recharged.

Feature Flower Friday: Craspedia

We’ve been using a lot of crasedia lately in the arrangements we’ve been doing, but who can blame us. It’s just SO cute!  There’s no other word to describe these adorable little flowers. They are available virtually all year round and usually last about 10-14 days. They mean “good health”. Naturally, they come yellow, however, painting them has become a trend as well. In the following pictures, they have been painted black.

There are a variety of looks you can create with craspedia, here are just a few ideas.

You can go BOLD,

OR SOFT,

Wedding Recap: Jenna and Marcus

Last fall we participated in a fun wedding package giveaway during the premiere of Mama Mia at DeVos hall.  Congrats to our lucky winners, Jenna and Marcus!! Best of luck on your journey and thank you for allowing us to be a part of your big day.

Special thanks goes out to Brooke and Kristen of Simply Weddings and Events.  They worked very hard to see that this couple’s wedding day was all that they had hoped it would be.

Wedding Recap: Leah and Todd Part II

When I first sat down with Leah, I knew instantly that she was a bride who loved the little details. She had thought about all of the precious details that go into making a wedding so spectacular. She was such a pleasure to work with! Her fun loving personality was radiant. And it shows in the pictures as well as in the style and design of the wedding: relaxed, carefree, casual and sweet.

What set Leah apart even more was that she was an out of state bride. She is originally from Colorado, but since they were getting married here, they were looking for a Grand Rapids florist, and they found us. And we couldn’t be more thrilled! Here are some of the sweet little details from this whimsical day shot by the talented Jennifer Mayo.

Navy blue, citrus yellow, and milk white…the perfect color combination for a clean summer wedding.

Here’s a sneak peak at this crisp June wedding that we designed for Leah and Todd for their special day. Look for a recap of the wedding later this week. And I just want to give a shout out to Jennifer Mayo for her great work in capturing the day. Awesome job!

Wedding Recap: Tori and Steve

When I met with Tori and Steve, they described their desire to have a relaxed outdoor wedding, filled with friends and family and fresh citrus colored flowers. And when they showed me their wedding invitations,  I couldn’t help but fall in love with the beautiful floral watercolor. Their invitations were the inspiration for this fun and festive summer wedding.

The bridal bouquet was an eclectic mix of some of my favorite flowers: green hypericum, lemon yellow freesia, and pee wee mini green hydrangea. Variegated lily grass loops added the sweetest touch to the the bouquet. But my personal favorites were the yellow craspedia, and tangerine colored ranunculus.

How much do you love the maid of honor’s floral print dress? And the sweet little flower girl!? Simple, large California sunflowers were used as a punchy accent against the girls tangerine dresses. And the flower girl carried a grapevine ball adorned with a kelly green ribbon and floral, to match the bridal bouquet.

Special thanks to Janet from Floral Verde for all her help with this wedding. She is not only talented but a great friend.

June 29, 2010 - 7:33 pm janet - Thanks for the shout out! I had a blast working with you that weekend!

July 4, 2010 - 4:59 pm Steve - I must admit, Tori did do an amazing job with the wedding planning. She picked out all of the flowers herself, and had great vision to pull all of the colors together. Great website, thanks for using our wedding as the focus of this post!!!

Friday Flower Feature “Protea”

Ladies and gentleman may I present to you the  PROTEA!

Image Courtesy of: Jen Lynne Photography

TA-DA! Fabulous, right?  Here we have the King Protea, just one of the many varieties of protea. At Modern Day Floral we tend to favor the pincushion protea but the king was definitely the focal point of this bouquet.

Image Courtesy of: Jen Lynne Photography

The protea comes in all sizes and colors but is happily one of the top ranking in vase life for cut flowers. Protea like to grow in warm Mediterranean climates and it’s beauty still holds when it is dried. If I were a flower this sounds like a great option…long lasting, lives in warm, tropical places and still beautiful when old!

This spicy, red protea couldn’t have been a better option for this late fall bouquet.
