Grand Rapids Wedding Affair: Stella Event Design booth

By now, many of you have become familiar with the fabulous Jessica Pennington of Stella Event Design. We have had the pleasure of designing several beautiful events for her this past wedding season that I’m very proud of. This fall we were asked to put our creative juices together again for the Grand Rapids Wedding Affair held at the Grand Rapids Public Museum this past October. Jessica selected one of my absolute favorite LaTavola linens (Twitter in Robin’s Egg) which set the stage perfectly for this “whimsically elegant meets nature” table.

From the bold china pattern to the whimsical table number and menu card, Jessica did a wonderful job bringing the smallest of details to life.

Cut succulence nestled among the manzanita branches worked perfectly to bring the natural element to the table design.

The finishing touch was a collection of hand-tied bouquets of white mini gerbera daisies and rich red ranunculus in sweet milk glass bud vases. These small but significant designs add to the sweetness of the design!

Grand Rapids Wedding Affair: Modern Day Floral booth

This past October, we headed over the to Grand Rapids Public Museum for the second annual Grand Rapids Wedding Affair hosted by Grand Rapids Bride magazine. We absolutely LOVE this show! Not only do we get to set-up a booth in an incredible venue, we get to meet incredible brides and visit with other industry professionals. The images below were all taken by Jennifer Mayo… if you would like to see more images from the show, be sure to check out her facebook page!

Our booth was set-up on the second floor next to the infamous clock! We had several different styles to show our brides… from earthy botannical to ubber modern, there was something to appease everyones senses!

Look One: Modern Glam

There is nothing more glamorous and dramatic than the phaelanopsis orchid. Add feathers, draping schwarzwalder calla lilies and lily grass and you have one dynamic and jaw-dropping look. We used a jewel-tones color scheme to enhance the swanky appeal of this bouquet. The beautiful couture linens are courtesy of La Tavola linens out of California.

Look Two: Classic Elegance

Garden roses, garden roses, garden roses…. oh how we have fallen in love with them over the past few months. This beautiful flower made its debut this summer to compliment and imitate the peony. We chose to use this beauty with our classic romance table… paired with white hydrangea and amnesia roses, we were able to show brides a dimensional white and ivory look. By complimenting the design with silver beaded chargers, crystal glassware and silver chivari chairs, the overall feel of this tablescape looked like a million dollars!

Look Three: Vintage

I have to admit this adorably simple table design is near and dear to my heart. Last spring while visiting my event designer friend in Seattle, Daniella owner of Bella Signature Design, she took me to this amazing fabric store. They had all the fabulous things you would imagine; scrumptious fabrics, vintage buttons and trim, and a ribbon room that would make you weak in the knees. I came home with all sorts of extra special goodies for our brides. When I found this vintage/modern fabric I had no idea where or how I was going to use it. All I knew is that I was saving it for something very special. The floral design itself was very simple with the use of singular blooms in milk glass. However the cylinder vases were wrapped in a coordinating fabric which matched the napkins perfectly. The finishing touch was a pair of sassy antique chairs painted pumpkin orange complete with a white leather cushion…so swanky!!

Look Four: Natural Botannical

This past year we have worked with an increasingly large number of brides who are desiring that natural feel without looking too rustic. Here we created a tablescape which brought to life a more botanical look, a combination of birch containers featuring again simple singular blooms and manzenita accented by succulence showcased on an earthy, textured linen really made this table stunning. The pairing of the wicker chargers, copper como flatware and tiny lanterns helped bring that little touch of rustic to the table.

The bridal bouquet featured in this photo was beautifully created by Rueben to match the botanical table. This unique bouquet featuring some of my all time favorites; lady slipper orchids, succulence, and fern curls. You have to check out Jennifer Mayo’s facebook to see this one up close and personal. The handle detail was spectacular!

When working through the design details alongside my assistant Erin, we agreed that our booth should showcase several different styles. Although our name is Modern Day Floral, I feel very strongly that the decor should reflect the personalities of our couples whether it be classic elegance, vintage modern, or natural botanical. Our goal is to create to a look that is as unique as the couples we have the priviledge to design for!

Event Recap: Engagement Party at Meijer Gardens

Last month, we worked alongside a beautiful bride-to-be and her mother to design a homespun engagement party located at the Michigan’s Farm Garden. This well-kept secret is a three-quarters replica of the home that Lena Meijers grew up in as a child. The home had all the sweet touches you would expect–an adorable red barn, a gorgeous garden, farm animals represented by bronze sculptures and a perfectly appointed farm house in butter yellow, of course. The setting was straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting.

The beautiful gardens surrounding the property served as our design inspiration for the material and colors used in the florals. Garden roses in shades of pink, coral and butter yellow coupled with several fantastic complimentary materials brought this country-style engagement party to life.

For those of you who have yet to visit Frederik Meijer Gardens, I would strongly recommend you take time to visit this absolutely stunning location. They not only host weddings and events, they host outdoor concerts, an annual butterfly exhibit and the gardens and sculpture park are truly spectacular. And now through September, Frederik Meijer Gardens is hosting a stellar collection of Chihully pieces. Thanks to Chaparral Shimko, the event coordinator, I was given a private tour during our event design meeting. I couldn’t help but leave feeling awe-inspired and creatively recharged.

Art Prize: Room 3

Last but not least this little swanky number!

I knew during the concept and design phase with Jodi that this room was going to be hot! The sexy color palette of sultry shades of purple with pops of black would make for a room that even Prince would be proud of.

For that “WOW factor” – these little beauties were created. Believe it or not, they stood over 7 feet tall and contained over 1500 carnations per design!

Once again Derek really outdid himself with this handcrafted urn made of ice! I spent one very cold morning in his cooler working through the details on everything. I was absolutely amazed. However, let’s just say I will not be quitting my day job to work as a ice sculpter…brrr it’s cold in there!

I love this shot Jen captured! I think it really showcases the scale of this ginormous pomander.

Picasso and Schwartzwalder calla lilies… a beautiful duo!

How outrageous is this vase? I love how it perfectly nestles the “Blue Magic” Vanda orchid and Anthirium.

I’m hopelessly in love with these platinum vases from Accent Decor and what better way to jazz them up then with banded Picasso and Schwartzwalder calla lilies. Picasso Callas definitely make me swoon!

I’m not sure how I would choose my favorite of the three rooms. Lets just say if I were relaxing in this room, I would be wearing a sexy pair of these high heeled slippers sipping on a purple haze martini! Caviar anyone? :)

Art Prize: Room 2

As promised, here is a glimpse into Room #2 from the closing ArtPrize sponsor gala! This room had SO many tasty features but my personal favorite was definitely the ice sculptures. I spent many sleepless nights agonizing over the proper ice encasement for the floral designs!!!

Thanks to the help of Derek at Ice Sculpture LTD and a little ingenuity the designs fit perfectly.

The use of crisp white containers and phaelanopsis orchids brought the modern simplicity to the room design. I don’t know about you but I appreciate a little “less is more” at times.

I absolutely love this full room shot! Jodi Bos of In Any Event and Special Events Rental did an amazing job pulling this clean, crisp modern room together beautifully.

The design concept of this tiny beauty stemmed from creating contrast between the softness of the cattleya orchid and the abrasive quality of the wire and cut mirror. Opposites attract

Next up room #3 and wait until you see this swanky little beauty! I can hardly wait!!!!

Art Prize: Room 1

As mentioned in my earlier post, the closing gala was one of the most incredible events we have had the honor to design. Jodi Bos of In Any Event along with the team from Special Events Rental did an amazing job transforming a not so glamorous site into something spectacular. Also, thanks to Jen Kroll,we have these gorgeous pictures to share with all of you!

The venue was split into three very distinct sections and styles: organic/botanical, modern and swanky couture. In an effort to share all the lovely details (and prevent a mile long post!), I decided to split this event into three blog posts.

First up – Organic/Botanical!!!

Focal Design

This 8ft. ginormous botanical design greeted guests as they entered the party. Affectionately known as the “little shop of horrors,” this design featured an unusual blend of pin cushion protea, green goddess calla lilies, orange banksia, wildcat oncidium orchids, succulence and a mixture of tropical foliage.

Cocktail Table Design

Orchids come in many different varieties and one particular species that thrills me every time is the lady slipper. This little beauty takes center stage with it’s beautiful lines and unique characteristics…amazing right?!

Bar Design

The bar design was a culmination of all of the floral elements used in the room. I loved how the flowers accentuated the colors of the room.

Art Prize Opening Ceremony

In Western Michigan, we are fortunate enough to live in a city that is rich in art and culture. We are also blessed to have many families who give back through their philanthropist efforts. Back in April, Rick DeVos announced that in the Fall of 2009, Grand Rapids would be home to the largest art prize competition. His ArtPrize would be awarding $250,000 to the first prize winner! Anyone and everyone was encouraged to enter and the end result was spectacular.

On September 23rd, the two week festivities kicked off with the help of the extraordinary Jodi Bos of In Any Event. We were asked to design a fresh, clean look to bring the colors of slate and saffron colors to life; craspedia, pin cushion protea and locally grown celosia were used as our primary design elements.

The crinkled taffeta linens coupled with the ghost chairs looked spectacular.

I absolutely love these crisp white containers! They’re perfect for super mod jumping designs!!

This little eclectic beauty was designed by Rueben whose unique style added the perfect flair to the registration tables. And how much do you love this container?!

The VIP opening reception was one of many events we were fortunate enough to design during the ArtPrize festivities. I look forward to sharing more!

I would also like to send a special thank you to the DeVos family for continuing to give back to our community and for making Grand Rapids such an amazing place to live! I’m so proud to be a Grand Rapidian!

Wedding Hairpieces!

Back during the bridal show back in October at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, we were able to design a few couture hairpieces for a few of the Design1 models. One of our designers, Emily, came up with this excellent idea of making hairpieces for brides and women who want to spice up their look. As we encourage her to get on Etsy and sell her unique and creative talent… we had Rueben practice Emily’s look just in case she has to go into mass production Enjoy!!

Event Recap of our Sexy/Mod Chic wedding at the JW Marriott

I knew when I met our bride, the fabulous Allison, we were in for a good time! She loved bold design and was open to anything. Both Allison and Matt’s main concern was that their guests had a fantastic time surrounded by great food, unbelievable entertainment and decor that was modern but not cold.

When designing at the JW, selecting just to the right accent color is key to creating a rock solid look. The carpet is bold but fantastic if paired with the perfect color palette, rich raspberry with black accents and punches of citron and aburgene was a perfectly playful pair for this spectacular venue.

Thanks to Karrn and Ken of Lotus Photographic I have amazing pictures to share. I feel so blessed to work with such talented and gracious photographers. If it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t have proof of our hard work. Thanks guys!

The personal flowers were distinctly unique and I couldn’t help but fall in love with the pocket squares. Our talented lonely male designer Rueben did such a great job on these! I don’t know if you can see them but the bridal bouquet actually contained not just one but four rings to represent the “something borrowed, something blue.”

We were all in love with Karen’s lovely little wreath designs made out of carnations!

Matt and Allison, the amazing couple! How much do you love her dress? It was made out of laser cut lace and looked absolutely stunning on her.

All of the table numbers, escort cards and menus were created by the talented Jill of Events by Icandy. The pattern was a play on their invitations which helped pull the complete look together.

As a surprise to the lovely couple, I had Jill create a custom lampshade to match the couples wedding pattern. These little lovelies were used on the head table.

Just a few more pictures of the head table and details. We have a lot more images to share in the future and I will keep you posted once the gallery has been added to the website. In the meantime enjoy and I hope you have a great Monday!

Exotic Waterfall Event

Imagine standing in front of Tiffany’s, someone hands you a large sum of cash and tells you to enjoy…how geeked would you be?! I know pretty ding-dang excited!! :) Well as floral designers working with a client who gives you creative freedom and a budget definitely creates that same sense of excitement. (Shhh…don’t tell my husband I still love a little bling)

The Crush is the hottest nightclub in Grand Rapids and thanks to Tony, the GM, he is always coming up with outrageous events for the club. This particular party was their annual rainforest event complete with parrots, snakes, waterfalls and hot tubs! Now seriously do these people know how to throw a party.

This ginormous design actually had a waterfall that ran behind it and perched perfectly next to the arrangement were two gorgeous Macaw’s.

Talk about swanky soft seating…loin cloth anyone?

I especially loved this container!

The entire club was dripping in spanish moss, ferns and fresh tropicals.

Happy Friday all! It’s a gorgeous day in GR and I think I’m going to enjoy a mango mojitos…at the Crush of course!
