In case you haven’t heard…we’ve moved!

Moving into a work/life commercial building was a huge decision for us, but we could not be happier with where we are. Having the luxury of working and playing all in one place could not be more ideal and we are falling more in love with the details of our space every day. Not to mention my little whippet, Sam and of course Frank and Jack keep me company when I’m burning the midnight oil! Watching the new space transform into our own little piece of heaven has been undeniably exciting and we figured what better way to get in the holiday spirit than a little sharing of what we’ve been keeping to ourselves.Stay tuned, we’ve got big news and lots more fabulous on the way!

Before Images : It’s amazing to look back at what this space once looked like. It took a village of people, whom I am entirely grateful for, to pull this together so beautifully. We still have a long way to go, but I am so thrilled with how far we’ve already come. Take a look at what we started with…

DIY project #1: I took my once lime green chairs with black and white damask fabric and restyled them into these charming little numbers.

New Seat Chair: I was delighted to find this fabulous new Moda fabric from this sweet little quilting store on Plainfield. I have a yard of fabric left and I would love to make a few pillows. Did I mention one of my goals for 2012 is to learn to sew?

It is amazing what a little spray paint, a staple gun and fabric can accomplish.

DIY Project #2: I was able to convert these gorgeous wooden frames into my very own life-size Pinterest boards (don’t forget to follow our Pinterest boards online here). I stretched blush pink and the gray vintage fabric creating space to display inspirational images, custom invitations and thank you notes. I’m hoping to find time in the next couple weeks to fill them up with some love. For now, they are making beautiful wall art.

And this, my friends, is my oh-so-happy place. Since my office and consultation space are now separate, I didn’t have to chose between my two favorite color palettes. My office colors are a lovely combination of dove gray and blush tones giving it a soft feminine feel. Custom gray velvet curtains are on the way and the ceiling will be draped with a lovely gray taffeta fabric. You can find me here in my cozy cloths working into the wee hours of the night. I mean, really, an office space that looks like this makes you never want to leave.

Honestly how can you resist this face?

The Catersource Table Top Competition: Vegas 2010

A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to travel to Las Vegas to design alongside one of my incredible clients, Aimee Sitka. When she asked if I would help with her entry for the infamous table top competition at the Catersource convention, I was beyond thrilled. Aimee is an immensely talented, energetic person who brings her creative flair to one of the largest catering companies internationally, Aramark.

The design inspiration for the table top entry was “La Hacienda”, a spanish themed dinner. It took us two solid days of early mornings, late nights and mad shopping sprees to TJ Maxx, World Cost Market, Mayesh Floral Supply and Pier One to get the job done. Although we had picked the theme, containers, basic colors and linens before hand, we spent a lot of time with the details on site, which made for an exciting time!!

The creative process started with a 10×10 tent frame which we draped in festive curtains from World Cost Market. The ceiling was finished with red curly willow and finished off with a primitive wrought iron chandelier.

This process took several hours and a lot of upper body strength. Lets just say, Starbucks and zip ties were definitely my best friend that morning!

These great little pitchers came from one of our favorite accessory suppliers, Kalahou. They carry everything from gorgeous colorful pottery to unique furniture pieces. How much do you love the wrought iron fames? Just another great Kalahou find…we’re definitely BIG fans!

Mmmm gotta love LaTavola linens. They have just about anything you could ever want! The rich combination of bold blues and bright oranges called to us! A huge thank-you to Emarie for working with us!

Simple, eclectic flowers were used in bold, colorful containers. My personal favorite was definitely this little blue and black beauty filled with several bunches of buplerum.

Tweaking and more tweaking attempting to get it just right!

It is finished! There were joyful tears and hugs shared when we finally finished this table.

Reflexed parrot tulips, black & white anemone, buplerum, orange pincushion protea, eremerus, succelence, sunflowers, coffee bean hypericum, ranunculus, and terra cotta toned roses worked beautifully to bring texture and color to the table design.

Here’s a little close up of Aimee’s custom menu design and dinnerware selections which made for a perfect table setting.

I’m a huge fan of the yummy sunflowers and coffee bean hypericum berries! I get giddy just looking at the fullness of this tabletop!!

Over 48 hours for 5 hours of glory = worth it! Yup we’re dorks!!

Inspired by Rococo

The rococo time period is, in my opinion, one of the best things to come out of France (besides Coco Chanel, of course!). Known for it delicate and ornate details, this time period is truly becoming this upcoming wedding seasons main inspiration.

Have you seen Marie Antoinette? If you haven’t, you’re missing out on a high fashioned flick! From clothing to interior design to furniture. It covers everything. And it completely encompasses the beauty of the Rococo period.

This coming wedding season, brides are using the pastel color palette commonly seen in this period. Not to mention all the feathers! If you’re not in love with the colors soft pink, light blue and gold… why not take a modern approach to a seemingly “old” period. Spice it up with bold colors such a hot pink and turquoise or electric purple and bright green… and using long ostrich plumes (maybe even some sassy peacock feathers!) along with soft seating that still uses the cabriole leg!

The Interior Design and Event/Floral Design Parallel

The parallel between event/floral design and interior design is so strong and absolutely undeniable. You can’t flip through any interior design or architectural magazine without seeing some floral element, whether it is used to compliment the overall design or what has inspired the design. You also can’t attend an event or wedding that isn’t somehow themed around a key period in design history.

From Rendering to Reality…a drawing comes to life!

So I hate to admit I’ve never been a very patient person especially when it comes to surprises. What can I say I’m just a kid at heart! And although I only have a few images I couldn’t resist sharing a sneak peak of the transformed space.

Thursday, the 2nd, the hard working Special Event Rental team draped white sateen fabric for nearly 8 hours while we worked hard at making sure all the chairs were straight and the crystal chandeliers hung in the just the right place.

This Friday, we have the honor of designing a full service wedding for Melissa and Marty. This particular couple is actually holding both the ceremony and reception in the same room. We will have a quick room flip as soon as the ceremony is over which will be no small task. The entire Modern Day design team is excited to create this stylish wedding for this amazing couple!

I’m especially excited to share with you the rendering board that my unbelievable assistant Erin created. For those of you who do not know Erin, let me do the honors. Erin is a recent Interior Design graduate of Kendall College of Art and Design. I have been blessed enough to have worked alongside her for nearly a year. She is my dot the i, cross the t girl with a passion for the wedding and event industry. During our 10 minute interview Erin shared with me her impeccable portfolio and I knew I had to hire her. Since that time, she has been bringing my vision to fruition through these remarkable rendering boards. Depending on the scale of the perspective, rendering boards can take thirty to forty hours to create however it is so worth the investment! People are visual and having the ability to share a tiny glimpse of the event this way is so exciting.

This particular perspective is in fact the set-up for the ceremony portion of the wedding. The ceiling will be draped in a sheer ivory fabric and the couple will be married under a canopy dripping with crystal and orchid strands, black chivari chairs dressed in fresh floral and apple green lamour ties will provide elegant seating while the wheat grass containers and candle collections will create a modern, clean look down the aisle. We made a few changes after the fact but I will wait to share until the event recap. Trust me when I say it’s gonna be good!

Much needed facelift

Ok, look at our hallway. Not much to write home about, right? THIS is why we have decided to completely transform our office area into something lavish and fabulous!

Today was another power packed day; lots of appointments, a photo shoot and my favorite part, a long awaited facelift! Not literally, but when Todd from Special Events Rental arrived to drape fabric in my “not so pretty” hallway let’s just say I was perfectly giddy!

When we moved into our Brassworks warehouse space we had a lot of prettying up to do. I absolutely can’t stand florescent lighting and the hallway was an eye soar. It was so frustrating because no matter what I did nothing helped. So after months of agonizing over what to do I called in the experts! I knew the only remedy was to drape the entire hallway in fabric.

The ivory fabric looks absolutely amazing and I can’t wait until tomorrow when the remaining chandeliers are hung! Todd found them at Home Depot… jackpot!
