ABOUT US

Welcome All! I am Jenn...

My lifetime dream became a reality with the opening of Modern Day Floral. Everyday I am fortunate enough to work with one of the most beautiful mediums in the world, fresh flowers. I absolutely love what I do and thanks to my brides, vendors, retails customers and special event client, I get to live out my dream daily. I would also like to personally thank my incredible staff for all their hard work and passion... They inspire me daily! Enjoy the blog, visit often and remember, we love "warm fuzzies!"

MEET THE STAFF!

What do you get when you bring a group of passionate and talented people together? Modern Day Floral! These fascinating men and women amaze me everyday with their commitment and love for this business. I think what truly makes our group so special is the diverse backgrounds we come from... From interior to clothing design, retailer and experience floral design... Wow, what a group!

Emily is one of my lead designers - she brings the energy to the group. She has been with me from the beginning and is responsible for the "look" that has become Modern Day Floral! The talent, commitment and positive attitude she brings to work is invaluable. The cup is always 1/2 full... She is my AI in AIFD!

Karen is another of my lead designers - her calm nature, experience and romantic style bring a complimentary element to Modern Day Floral. She is the most amazing Christmas tree decorator and is affectionately known as Miss Christmas :)

Rueben is the newest lead designer to the group! His clean, unique and contemporary styles brings a new flare to Modern Day Floral. He keeps us entertained with his amazing music collection on his iPod!!

Erin brings with her a BFA in interior design from Kendall College of Art and Design and an incredibly passionate type A personality. She is my checks and balances girl with a quest for knowledge. Perspective drawings are definitely her specialty... This girl is going places!

Lauren is our public relations and marketing guru! She brings a fun, spunky energy to our group and isn't afraid to jump into the middle of any task!!

Charlie, Jonathan, Ernie, Aaron and Ryan are the guys of the group (poor souls)! The mere fact that they tolerate all of us for more than 5 minutes is a miracle. Estrogen flows in buckets at Modern Day but believe it or not, we're all a loving family!

In case you haven’t heard…we’ve moved!

Moving into a work/life commercial building was a huge decision for us, but we could not be happier with where we are. Having the luxury of working and playing all in one place could not be more ideal and we are falling more in love with the details of our space every day. Not to mention my little whippet, Sam and of course Frank and Jack keep me company when I’m burning the midnight oil! Watching the new space transform into our own little piece of heaven has been undeniably exciting and we figured what better way to get in the holiday spirit than a little sharing of what we’ve been keeping to ourselves.Stay tuned, we’ve got big news and lots more fabulous on the way!

Before Images : It’s amazing to look back at what this space once looked like. It took a village of people, whom I am entirely grateful for, to pull this together so beautifully. We still have a long way to go, but I am so thrilled with how far we’ve already come. Take a look at what we started with…

DIY project #1: I took my once lime green chairs with black and white damask fabric and restyled them into these charming little numbers.

Old Seat Chair:

New Seat Chair: I was delighted to find this fabulous new Moda fabric from this sweet little quilting store on Plainfield. I have a yard of fabric left and I would love to make a few pillows. Did I mention one of my goals for 2012 is to learn to sew?

It is amazing what a little spray paint, a staple gun and fabric can accomplish.

DIY Project #2: I was able to convert these gorgeous wooden frames into my very own life-size Pinterest boards (don’t forget to follow our Pinterest boards online here). I stretched blush pink and the gray vintage fabric creating space to display inspirational images, custom invitations and thank you notes. I’m hoping to find time in the next couple weeks to fill them up with some love. For now, they are making beautiful wall art.

And this, my friends, is my oh-so-happy place. Since my office and consultation space are now separate, I didn’t have to chose between my two favorite color palettes. My office colors are a lovely combination of dove gray and blush tones giving it a soft feminine feel. Custom gray velvet curtains are on the way and the ceiling will be draped with a lovely gray taffeta fabric. You can find me here in my cozy cloths working into the wee hours of the night. I mean, really, an office space that looks like this makes you never want to leave.

Honestly how can you resist this face?

Check back later this week to see the rest of our beautifully transformed space. Make it a great day!

Our new address is:  1551 Richmond NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504

Featured on Style Me Pretty

This morning I received exciting news that another one of our weddings would be featured on Style Me Pretty. What a wonderful early Christmas present!

I have a soft spot for Lauren and her family.  During the planning process I became very close to Lauren, and her mother, Nancy.  We became fast friends and spent countless hours making sure every design detail was just right. Unfortunately the week of the wedding they lost a dear family member which was absolutely heartbreaking.  It was amazing to watch everyone pull together to see that this day was as special as the family.  We feel so blessed to have been a part of such a significant day.  I was reminded again that what we provide is far more than flowers.

Congratulations to the gorgeous couple Lauren and Bryan!!

December 16, 2011 - 1:43 pm Danielle DeWitt - Imagine my delight when I saw that there was a new entry in the MDF Blog! What a treat! I am excited to check out the feature and congrats to your whole team...you rock!

Roof top event at the Amway Grand Plaza

A Vegas themed party for 125+ business persons? …How fun! A playable, life-sized roulette table made only of ice in 90 degree heat? …Of course! A 40′ x 90′ foot tent hoisted up to the 4th floor roof top tennis courts by a scissor life? …No problem! Severe weather with 35 mile an hour wind gust? …We can handle it!

When Joyce from the  Amway Grand Plaza Hotel along with Adam from the JW asked us to design their first ever event on their amazing fitness center deck, we gladly jumped through hoops to make it happen!

Mike and his team of dare devils from Special Events Rental spent the entire day going up and down the scissor lift.  The wind certainly made the day interesting, to say the least.

The guys worked long, tireless hours in the 94 degree heat to help bring this event together.  I still can’t believe they managed to get everything accomplished in just two days. I guess you could say I owe the boys a few ice cold beers!

When designing an event I typically select a linen first for inspiration.  I couldn’t resist using one of my all time favorites, BBJ’s Carlisle Lamour.  I’m absolutely in love with it’s bold pattern and vibrant colors!   The 40′ x 90′ frame tent was accented with a gorgeous tangerine colored taffeta and lush tropical plants.

Rue did a wonderful job bringing the clean and contemporary style floral designs to life.

No event would be complete without fabulous throw pillows.  Thanks to Pier One we found the perfect match!

Eccentric Entertainment provided several gaming tables from  Craps to Blackjack.

However the most unique gaming table was definitely the solid ice roulette table made by the amazing crew from Ice Sculptures, LTD. If you haven’t watched their series Ice Brigade on Food Network check them out.  The show is entertaining, not to mention I’m amazed at what they are able to construct out of ice.

What’s better than a beer luge on a 94 degree day?  :)

No Vegas night would be complete without a little entertainment.  The ice gurus stole the show with their 30 minute rock and roll ice carving performance.   Derek was a master working his chainsaw.  As always, Jen Lynne did an amazing job photographing the event. Hands down, this is my favorite shot captured throughout the evening.

Special thanks to everyone who was involved on this project…We hit the jackpot on this one!!!

Viva Modern Day!

June 14, 2011 - 12:21 am alicia - cool, cool, cool! love the pattern linen on the cab tables & that ice luge is the best one I've ever seen!

June 14, 2011 - 4:42 am Danielle - Speechless. In the words of one of my favorite people, it's just so ding-dang FABULOUS! congrats Team Modern Day Floral...this is amazing!!!

June 14, 2011 - 8:06 am Trish Van de Merkt - Wow Jenn! You really turned it out! Looks fantastic, the colors and the ice, awesome!

June 14, 2011 - 10:20 am Michigan Wedding Photographer - Amazing setup. I am still new to wedding photography. Shooting contract mostly. Hoping to shoot a wedding with this level of details soon.

June 29, 2011 - 7:52 pm Jen Lynne - What a great event Jenn! You did such a spectacular job putting this all together :) I loved working with you on this, your energy and passion just shines!

My girls

It has been far too long since I blogged last but rather than recap another event, I wanted to share a bit of myself,  my beautiful girls.  So often when you become a business owner your world quickly becomes one dimensional, you run from meetings to events, answering phone calls and late night emails.   I hate to admit I’m guilty as charged!  Finding balance is crucial and certainly something I have been working towards for years.   Thank goodness for the unconditional love from my family.

Now onto the good stuff…let me introduce you to my daughters, Britteny, Laurel and Olivia.  These girls have made me laugh more than cry and can claim at least a few gray hairs on this head of mine!  Running a blended household presented its challenges at times but I feel so blessed that these girls love each other so much.  The way I see it,  I have three wonderful children and only had to endure labor once!  Talk about lucky!!!

Brittany (left) Laurel (middle)  Olivia (right)

As if life couldn’t get any sweeter, my oldest Laurel made me the youngest grandmother on the planet with the birth of Miss Hailie Anne then again just last year with our little red headed princess, Livia.

Hailie is what I like to call my little “retirement plan!” :) She loves floral design as much as her Nana and takes her job very seriously as you can tell by the photo.  Hailie is an absolute sponge when it comes to learning how to design and care for flowers.  I can’t wait until she is old enough to drive so we can spend countless hours working together.

Call me a little biast but I think this little girl did a pretty fantastic job picking out the perfect flowers to compliment the perfect vase.  Yup, she’s a natural!

Thank you for allowing me to gush a little.  Life is good!

Love,

Jenn a/k/a mom, a/k/a nana xxoo

May 30, 2011 - 12:25 am janet - You have such a beautiful family! <3

May 30, 2011 - 6:51 pm Laurel Jean - Love you!

Tanner and Nicole: A Grand Rapids Wedding

I’ve always loved the classic style of Audrey Hepburn,  a great Chanel suit and the perfect shade of ruby red lipstick.  So when I met with Nicole and she began sharing her 1950′s retro inspired wedding style I couldn’t help myself.  From the ruby red, crisp white and turquoise color palette,  handmade fabric boutonnieres, short sassy bridal gown and red sling back shoes this wedding had stylish written all over it.

I love how the contrasting bouquets look against the girls dresses and the turquoise jewelry adds just the perfect pop of color.

Nicole’s bridal bouquet featured locally grown dahlias, celosia and hypericum berries.

This sassy wedding was captured by the talented Kelly Braman photography.  Great work Kel!!

May 5, 2011 - 3:25 pm Anne Oppenhuizen - Awesome work as always, Jen!

May 5, 2011 - 9:18 pm Kelly Braman - What a fun wedding, adorable couple and beautiful bouquets! Love your work, Jenn! xo

November 30, 2011 - 2:20 pm Stephanie | Stella Event Design - The contrast between the white and red bouquets is perfect!

Grand Valley Arboretum wedding

Jason and Rachel’s simple earthy wedding took place in the beautiful Arboretum located on the campus of Grand Valley State University.  The mature trees and natural surroundings served as the perfect backdrop.  To compliment the couples overall feel the bouquets featured florals in shades of moss green, eggshell and chocolate brown.

Rachel looked simply stunning in her one shoulder dress and bird cage veil.

The bridal bouquet was a simple design containing a combination of hydrangea, hypericum berries, vendella roses,  locally grown millet and oat grass and kiwi vine which was woven within the bouquet.  Keeping with the earthy style the hydrangea foliage was left on the stems which added a rich green leafy collar to the bouquet.

Here’s a closer look at the simple earthy bouquet.

The bridesmaids texture rich bouquets of large green peruvian hydrangea, kermit pomps, hypericum berries, lisianthus, salal and kiwi vine worked beautifully against the girls chocolate brown chiffon dresses.  However my favorite little touch are the gold tree necklaces the girls are wearing.

April 12, 2011 - 12:37 pm Colleen Bray - Soooo beautiful!

April 22, 2011 - 11:41 pm Russ Climie - Just ran across this post and I am SO glad you posted these images! Rachel's bouquet was my wife's favorite of 2010! As always, another job well done and I look forward to seeing more of your creations in 2011!

April 22, 2011 - 11:53 pm Rachel Diedering - Thanks again for a beautiful bouquet! They literally took my breath away when I first saw them. And the details on the guy's flowers was amazing, too-I loved how the kiwi vine held the boutonnieres together. Thanks for adding to our day! I almost forgot, you also were able to help us out with the wheat grass for our homemade frame boxes-they never would have turned out so nicely without your help!

A Day with David Beahm

Happy Wednesday!  I hope you had a very relaxing weekend and enjoyed time doing what you love.  I spent the better part of my agenda free weekend catching up on blog posts and updating new images to facebook which was absolutely fantastic!  As I sat writing this post, I couldn’t help but feel like a heel for not writing this post sooner.  Since stepping off the plane from New York I have been going full tilt.

A few weeks ago I was invited to join 16 other designers from all over the country to meet in New York for a floral and event designers dream vacation.  Holly Chappel of Holly Chappel Design was the mastermind who organized this exciting field trip.  Day One:   Hands-on class with the talented David Beahm and  a tour of the New York flower market. Day Two:  Attend a taping of the Martha Stewart show followed by a tour of Ovando Flowers, the list goes on.  This was my first trip to New York and I was completely blown away.

We arrived at David’s design studio bright and early Monday morning after our tour of the beautiful flower markets.  The studio had a fresh urban vibe high exposed ceilings, crisp white walls painted concrete floors filled with an eclectic blend of modern and antique furniture.   Not to mention who wouldn’t love to have a wall filled with that many magazine covers!

We spent most of our morning immersed in a hands-on class.  The conversation centered around how to take a standard container and create several different looks.  This relaxed environment allowed for a lot of Q & A time with Holly, David and his assistant Jeremy.

After a delicious catered lunch we participated in an exciting challenge of designing a tablescape for someone famous.  Whoopi Goldberg, Dr. Suess, Queen Elizabeth and Frank Sinatra were among the infamous guest tables.  Imagine how excited I was when I drew ole’ blue eyes name out of the hat.  Who had more swagger than good ole’ Frank himself?  We were given card blanch to use anything in the prop closet.    It was a frenzy but everyone had a fabulous time bringing all their fabulous famous people to life.

We closed our day out with David sharing an encore of his Engage 10 presentation, a powerful meditation and champagne celebration.  David is a man of great talent who is so open and willing to share.  The day was incredible and I left feeling so inspired and renewed.   I look forward to sharing everything I learned with our clients.  This is exactly why I take these trips.  What an experience!

Meet me in New York

Thanks to social media the world has become quite small.  Twitter and facebook have allowed people to connect not only personally but professionally as well.  I have been incredibly fortunate enough to establish friendships with designers from all of over the country who share the same passion for what I do.  So, when the outstanding Holly from Holly Heider Chapple Flowers tweeted “meet me in New York,”  several weeks ago I immediately responded.   Who, what and where?  New York City Fashion district, 17 talented floral and event designers, David Beahm and Martha Stewart was all I needed to know.  I’m going! Holly affectionately named our group the “chapel designers.”  I will be sure to post a link with the play by play blog recap of this trip once it is finished.  Thank you Holly for organizing this trip.  I’m honored to be a part of this group.

I arrived yesterday morning at 4:00am after one very long evening of travel.  Needless to say I arrived in one piece exhausted but thrilled at the upcoming events just 3 hours away.  Today was packed full of exciting activities; a tour of the New York flower market, a day with the infamous David Beahm and his design team followed by a cocktail party at a swanky boutique hotel.  Day one of “meet me in New York” was filled with intense emotion, inspiration and rejuvenation.  I couldn’t help but feel moved by how gracious and brutally honest David was.   It was refreshing to spend the day with such a talented yet humble group of individuals.

Here’s a few little teasers from our tour today.  The anemones were insane!!!! Enjoy and I promise there is more to follow.

Tomorrow we’re off to attend a taping of the Martha Stewart show followed by a visit to the garment district.  Here’s hoping I come home with a fabulous swag bag.  Night everyone!

March 8, 2011 - 6:45 am Danielle DeWitt - Oh so glad you are having such an amazing trip, Jenn! You have worked so hard to get to where you are! Can't wait to hear more! God bless you!
