ABOUT US

Welcome All! I am Jenn...

My lifetime dream became a reality with the opening of Modern Day Floral. Everyday I am fortunate enough to work with one of the most beautiful mediums in the world, fresh flowers. I absolutely love what I do and thanks to my brides, vendors, retails customers and special event client, I get to live out my dream daily. I would also like to personally thank my incredible staff for all their hard work and passion... They inspire me daily! Enjoy the blog, visit often and remember, we love "warm fuzzies!"

MEET THE STAFF!

What do you get when you bring a group of passionate and talented people together? Modern Day Floral! These fascinating men and women amaze me everyday with their commitment and love for this business. I think what truly makes our group so special is the diverse backgrounds we come from... From interior to clothing design, retailer and experience floral design... Wow, what a group!

Emily is one of my lead designers - she brings the energy to the group. She has been with me from the beginning and is responsible for the "look" that has become Modern Day Floral! The talent, commitment and positive attitude she brings to work is invaluable. The cup is always 1/2 full... She is my AI in AIFD!

Karen is another of my lead designers - her calm nature, experience and romantic style bring a complimentary element to Modern Day Floral. She is the most amazing Christmas tree decorator and is affectionately known as Miss Christmas :)

Rueben is the newest lead designer to the group! His clean, unique and contemporary styles brings a new flare to Modern Day Floral. He keeps us entertained with his amazing music collection on his iPod!!

Erin brings with her a BFA in interior design from Kendall College of Art and Design and an incredibly passionate type A personality. She is my checks and balances girl with a quest for knowledge. Perspective drawings are definitely her specialty... This girl is going places!

Lauren is our public relations and marketing guru! She brings a fun, spunky energy to our group and isn't afraid to jump into the middle of any task!!

Charlie, Jonathan, Ernie, Aaron and Ryan are the guys of the group (poor souls)! The mere fact that they tolerate all of us for more than 5 minutes is a miracle. Estrogen flows in buckets at Modern Day but believe it or not, we're all a loving family!

Taking Center Stage – A Grand Rapids Bridal Gown Boutique: Renee Austin Wedding

Maggie with Renee Austin Wedding is one sassy entrepreneur! With a super chic bridal salon in downtown Grand Rapids, she is doing everything right when it comes to preparing an excited bride for her big day. A few weeks ago, we had Maggie answer some questions about how she does it… Her answers are real and we know you’ll fall in love with her and her boutique just like we did!

What first sparked your interest in the wedding gowns?

To be honest, wedding gowns weren’t necessarily what I thought I would do. I always wanted to own and run my own boutique… When I was younger, I used to love watching Platinum Weddings and A Wedding Story on TLC so when a friend of mine started a prom store, wedding gowns just seemed like a great compliment. Now I can’t imagine doing any else!

If you could work with any one, who would it be?

Donald Trump. Even though it’s a completely different business, I would like to spend a day with him and listen to his day-to-day.

Any great business advice you swear by?

If you’re not learning with every step, then what are you doing?

What is your must-have item on the job?

Chapstick and an open mind!

What is the most important personal satisfaction you get with your career?

It’s always a happy moment when a bride finds her dress, but it’s very rewarding when they thank me and let me know that I have been the most helpful. My emotions are always running high right there with my brides!

Maggie Sottero’s Fantasia

What does your “normal day” consist of?

When I wake up, I spend 30-45 minutes on my phone – checking email, checking the calendar, checking Facebook and I play this game, Words, with friends on my iPhone. After getting to the store, I check in new inventory from UPS and get ready for any appointments coming in that day. Everyday, I work with brides, MOB’s and bridesmaids deciding colors, sizes, ect. After the store is closed, I usually spend 30 minutes making a list for the next day. When I arrive home, I eat dinner, hang out with my lovely roommates and read a book before falling asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow.

Days off and down time are cherished in this industry. How do you spend yours?

On most days off, I still find myself working for an hour or two. But I love sleeping in and I LOVE running errands! When I can do some shopping and just have an entire day to myself to do what I want, I’m usually busy running around Grand Rapids and having lunch with a friend.

What do you want brides to now specifically about you and Renee Austin Wedding?

Know that without you, I wouldn’t be here. Every day I do my best to branch out of the norm and make sure that your experience is untouchable to an other place you go.

February 14, 2011 - 12:33 pm Danielle DeWitt - Great interview! You're right - she's a very sassy entrepreneur! :) I love that she'd want to spend a day with Donald Trump - I agree that would be very interesting!

February 20, 2011 - 7:57 pm Danielle Perdew - Maggie is the best :)!!! She is all about making her customers happy and listens so well to them! This place is by far the top bridal gown place around!

A Lakeshore Wedding: Beth and Cesar

The setting was absolutely spectacular – the weather, gorgeous and the couple, so in love. I’m so thankful to Jessica from Stella Event Design for allowing us to play a part in Beth and Cesar’s big day. This wedding was one for the books.

The lush bouquet was a combination of some of my favorite blooms: Juliet, Rosalind and Cymbeline garden roses, peach hypericum and Sarah Bernhardt peony.  This was the brides favorite flower and thanks to a California grower, her bouquet had peony in September!!

How adorable is that little peanut with her grapevine pomander ball?

Photographer, Jennifer Mayo, did a marvelous capturing not only the moment but the spectacular backdrop.  This image is simply breathtaking!

The room layout I designed for this wedding contained a mix of long banquet style tables and squares featuring a different but complimentary  centerpiece design.

The hydrangea is so absolutely perfect it hardly looks real!

This table shot showcases all the care and attention paid to each and every place setting.  Beth did a wonderful job working through the details with her mother,  Jessica and the caterer.

The scrumptious dessert display florals. Lush, full and absolutely dynamic!

This is one of my favorite detail shots Jennifer captured that day.  It showcases not only the florals beautifully but the classic navy pintuck linen and pretty napkin detail.

Best of luck Beth and Cesar as you journey through life together and thank you for allowing us to be a part of such a magical day.

Grand Rapids Wedding Affair: Stella Event Design booth

By now, many of you have become familiar with the fabulous Jessica Pennington of Stella Event Design.  We have had the pleasure of designing several beautiful events for her this past wedding season that I’m very proud of.  This fall we were asked to put our creative juices together again for the Grand Rapids Wedding Affair held at the Grand Rapids Public Museum this past October.   Jessica selected one of my absolute favorite LaTavola linens (Twitter in Robin’s Egg) which set the stage perfectly for this “whimsically elegant meets nature” table.

From the bold china pattern to the whimsical table number and menu card, Jessica did a wonderful job bringing the smallest of details to life.

Cut succulence nestled among the manzanita branches worked perfectly to bring the natural element to the table design.

The finishing touch was a collection of hand-tied bouquets of white mini gerbera daisies and rich red ranunculus in sweet milk glass bud vases. These small but significant designs add to the sweetness of the design!

Thank you  Jessica for entrusting us to bring your vision to fruition.  We look forward to another season of memorable events!!

Grand Rapids Wedding Affair: Modern Day Floral booth

This past October, we headed over the to Grand Rapids Public Museum for the second annual Grand Rapids Wedding Affair hosted by Grand Rapids Bride magazine. We absolutely LOVE this show! Not only do we get to set-up a booth in an incredible venue, we get to meet incredible brides and visit with other industry professionals. The images below were all taken by Jennifer Mayo… if you would like to see more images from the show, be sure to check out her facebook page!

Our booth was set-up on the second floor next to the infamous clock! We had several different styles to show our brides… from earthy botannical to ubber modern, there was something to appease everyones senses!

Look One: Modern Glam

There is nothing more glamorous and dramatic than the phaelanopsis orchid. Add feathers, draping schwarzwalder calla lilies and lily grass and you have one dynamic and jaw-dropping look. We used a jewel-tones color scheme to enhance the swanky appeal of this bouquet. The beautiful couture linens are courtesy of La Tavola linens out of California.

Look Two: Classic Elegance

Garden roses, garden roses, garden roses…. oh how we have fallen in love with them over the past few months. This beautiful flower made its debut this summer to compliment and imitate the peony. We chose to use this beauty with our classic romance table… paired with white hydrangea and amnesia roses, we were able to show brides a dimensional white and ivory look. By complimenting the design with silver beaded chargers, crystal glassware and silver chivari chairs, the overall feel of this tablescape looked like a million dollars!

Look Three: Vintage

I have to admit this adorably simple table design is near and dear to my heart.  Last spring while visiting my event designer friend in Seattle, Daniella owner of Bella Signature Design,  she took me to this amazing fabric store.  They had all the fabulous things you would imagine; scrumptious fabrics, vintage buttons and trim, and a ribbon room that would make you weak in the knees.  I came home with all sorts of extra special goodies for our brides.   When I found this vintage/modern fabric I had no idea where or how I was going to use it.  All I knew is that I was  saving it for something very special.  The floral design itself was very simple with the use of singular blooms in milk glass.  However the cylinder vases were wrapped in a coordinating fabric which matched the napkins perfectly.  The finishing touch was a pair of sassy antique chairs painted pumpkin orange complete with a white leather cushion…so swanky!!

Look Four: Natural Botannical

This past year we have worked with an increasingly large number of brides who are desiring that natural feel without looking too rustic.  Here we created a tablescape which brought to life a more botanical look, a combination of birch containers featuring again simple singular blooms and manzenita accented by succulence showcased on an earthy, textured linen really made this table stunning.  The pairing of the wicker chargers, copper como flatware and tiny lanterns helped bring that little touch of rustic to the table.

The bridal bouquet featured in this photo was beautifully created by Rueben to match the botanical table.  This unique bouquet featuring some of my all time favorites; lady slipper orchids, succulence, and fern curls.  You have to check out Jennifer Mayo’s facebook to see this one up close and personal.  The handle detail was spectacular!

When working through the design details alongside my assistant Erin, we agreed that our booth should showcase several different styles.  Although our name is Modern Day Floral, I feel very strongly that the decor should reflect the personalities of our couples whether it be classic elegance, vintage modern, or natural botanical. Our goal is to create to a look that is as unique as the couples we have the priviledge to design for!

The Knot Michigan: Stephanie and Ken’s Lakeshore Wedding

We are beyond excited to announce our fourth publication in The Knot Michigan! The Spring/Summer 2011 issue is filled with several of incredible weddings and we’re so excited to have our work displayed as well! Make sure to grab a copy but in the meantime, enjoy!

Stephanie’s bridal bouquet consisted of green hydrangea, ti leaf wraps, black bacarra roses, kangaroo paw, green hypericum, red majestic calla lilies and the most spectacular lady slipper orchids we have ever seen!

The amount of texture involved in this wedding was absolutely amazing… between the florals, the linens and the incredibly delicious looking cake, it doesn’t get much better than that!

A HUGE congratulations goes out to Jodi of In Any Event, Jen of Jen Kroll Photography, John with Coastline Studios, Mike, Todd and Larry with Special Events Rental, Barb with Sweet Cakes Designs and all of the other vendors who were involved in making this such a wonderful wedding!!!

January 14, 2011 - 10:29 am Shannon - Beautiful elements all pulled together by amazing talent for outstanding results. Congrats to you all on your hard work!

A Grand Rapids Wedding: Kellie and Jason

A Holland Wedding: Abby and Bryan

Clean and contemporary wedding in shades of lemon yellow, dusty gray paired with crisp white and pops of black… I don’t know about you but I love this combination.  This was what one fabulous Chicago couple wanted for their lakeshore wedding.  Thanks to Jessica from Stella Event Design, we had the pleasure of designing for several stylish couples this season.

Abby and Bryan were married during an outdoor ceremony at Boatwerks located on beautiful Lake Macatawa.   From Abby’s gorgeous gown, fantastic bridesmaids dresses, dapper menswear and unique floral selection this wedding was far from conventional.

I will spare you the long explanation and share the tasty images taken by the talented Kara Purtell.  Kara did a marvelous job capturing every aspect of this wedding for this beautiful couple. Enjoy!

Not only was Abby’s dress perfect but the bridesmaids dresses were to die for!!   Pair those sassy little numbers with an all craspedia clutch and it doesn’t get any better.  Abby’s bouquet was a rich textural combination of mokara orchids, brezillia, craspedia, calla lilies, and phaleanopsis orchids.  Thanks Abby for allowing me to think outside the box.

A canopy of sheer ivory fabric and beaded orchid strands helped to create the perfect romantic backdrop for Abby and Bryan.   This pretty little get-up was a bit of challenge and caused a whole lot of indigestion but it was so worth it.  Fortunately, with the help of  a little duck tape, a few wooden dowels and the cooperation from Mother Nature, they had the perfect backdrop for their ceremony.

We absolutely loved the modern simplicity of the reception… each design captured the beauty of each individual flower.

Thank you Abby and Bryan for allowing us to design such an incredible wedding! We wish you the best of luck in your new marriage and next time I’m in Chicago, we’re going out for a cocktail or two!
